An May 2009 ordinance proposed in Portland Oregon would drastically increase the Motor Vehicle Rental Tax from 12.5 percent to 17 percent, making it one of the highest in the country.   With more and more tightening local government budgets, I expect to see more of these types of initiatives popping up around the country.

What does this mean to you? Well, possibly higher rental rates in areas with higher rental car taxes. But remember, you can choose the pickup destination. If you can, opt for al ocation with lower motor vehicle rental taxes.
