Car Rental Savings Tip:
Save money by choosing off-airport locations. Airport car rental locations typically pay additional airport taxes and fees which are passed on to the consumer.
By choosing an agency located outside the airport, you can save yourself quite a bit of money.

An May 2009 ordinance proposed in Portland Oregon would drastically increase the Motor Vehicle Rental Tax from 12.5 percent to 17 percent, making it one of the highest in the country. With more and more tightening local government budgets, I expect to see more of these types of initiatives popping up around the country.
What does this mean to you? Well, possibly higher rental rates in areas with higher rental car taxes. But remember, you can choose the pickup destination. If you can, opt for al ocation with lower motor vehicle rental taxes.
You might assume that rates with one company will be same regardless of the exact location in the same city. Wrong assumption. You can actually save by choosing locations that are cheaper to operate and/or pay fewer taxes.
Here are two tips that could help save you money on your next car rental:
1. Choose Off-Airport Locations
Many times, you save big money by choosing off-airport rental locations. These locations don't have as many taxes and fees tacked on to their rates, so they may offer cheaper rentals. One good example of this is Anchorage, Alaska. The Anchorage airport car rental taxes are notoriously high -- making Anchorage airport car rentals an expensive choice.
2. Avoid Downtown & High Visiblility Locations
Another tip is to choose rental agencies located in lower rent areas. Avoid downtown and high tourism areas. These will tend to charge higher rates to compensate for higher real estate rents and possibly more taxes.
